Beyond the Panel: How Ditto X Is Rethinking the Music Conference for Independent Artists

For independent artists, navigating the music industry means wearing more hats than ever. From building an audience and understanding data to managing rights, royalties and new technology, there’s a lot to get to grips with, and often no obvious place to start.
That’s where Ditto X takes a slightly different approach to the traditional music industry conference. Rather than spending a full day listening to panel after panel, the event is designed around interaction, bringing independent artists face-to-face with the people, platforms and technology they can actually use to build their careers.
Now in its sixth year, Ditto X: Meet The Music Industry has grown from an intimate London event into a major gathering for the independent music community.
Ahead of Ditto X 2026 at The O2 this November, we spoke with Mike Murphy, Global Head Of Events & Partnerships / Label Services Manager at Ditto Music, about how the event has evolved, why interactivity and transparency matter, and the role technology can play in helping independent artists take greater control of their careers. | ![]() |
For readers new to it, what is Ditto X, and how does it fit alongside Ditto Music?
“Ditto X is our conference and networking event which we’ve developed over the past 8 years. We have run these internationally across the UK, US, Africa, Australia and Latin America as a way of supporting the independent music communities.
At Ditto Music, we like to champion music industry education and transparency, and Ditto X is where we put it into practice. We bring real people from our key partners into the same room as aspiring independent artists of all ages, helping them understand important things for their careers, like royalties, sync licensing, artist marketing and more, as well as our own music distribution services, while hopefully inspiring them on their journeys.
Our flagship UK event, now in its 6th year, has grown to become the biggest and most unique one-day independent music conference in the country, and our US events are also gaining traction.”
With Ditto X being in its 6th year, how has it grown and changed since the first one?
“We’re heading to the O2 for the 6th year in a row. But taking a look back to the start, we first launched in 2018 on Brick Lane in London to 120 people, before COVID struck. Coming back from COVID we knew we needed a hard reset on the idea and wanted to return with something much bigger.
Attendance is growing every year and we’ve seen more and more partners and independent communities getting involved. That growth has given us room to add more stages and spaces for panels, workshops, live performances, interactive experiences and more.
We’re now getting closer to 2,000 attendees across a single day, across various spaces including Indigo at The O2 and beyond. The programme has grown to cover 5 to 6 stage areas, with sessions that are genuinely useful for independent artists and budding industry professionals.”
What sets Ditto X apart from other music industry conferences?
“We are far from corporate in our approach. We simply put ourselves in the shoes of a new or developing independent artist. What do they actually want to know? They want to understand royalties, how to land sync deals, how to market their own music effectively. Stuff that’s genuinely useful to growing artists.
Our aim is to provide all the latest info artists need to succeed, as well as genuine networking opportunities, with real-time feedback and the chance to meet and collaborate with people actually working in the industry.”
This year includes social media clinics, a music video marketplace, an AI generator and a TikTok live-streaming booth. Why the focus on hands-on experiences over traditional stalls and panels?
“We don’t want our delegates to be ‘talked at’ all day. We want to keep things focused, interesting and engaging so they walk away feeling inspired, hyped and excited to get moving with their careers and creativity.
Not to mention it’s a full-on day, so we also want to make it as fun as possible and see everyone truly enjoy it, from start to finish.”
How important are data and transparency to artists today, and how does that shape what you showcase at Ditto X?
“Artists today have access to more data and streaming stats than ever, but knowing what to do with it is another matter. So in the past we’ve hosted Spotify for Artists masterclasses, where attendees learn how to make the most of the platform.
And transparency is so important, it’s what Ditto X is all about. We talk openly about how the industry works and bring artists face-to-face with the partners and tools they can actually use. It’s also a chance to show that we’re real people, not a faceless company. Artists can meet our team, ask questions and get honest answers on the day. For us, that’s what can create opportunities and build trust.”
Which sessions or experiences at this year's event are you most excited about?
“We’ve got so much exciting and interactive stuff planned. We have a social media clinic, a music video maker, a performance booth live-streaming on socials, listening and feedback rooms, DJ decks, plus a red carpet welcome with plenty of photo ops. And that’s not even mentioning the main panels and workshops.”
Finally, what's one piece of advice you'd give independent artists or music businesses about managing their rights and revenue?
“Make sure you’re collecting every revenue stream available to you. So many artists leave money on the table without realising it.
Streaming and downloads are only part of the picture. Publishing royalties like performance, mechanical and sync could be owed to you too. That’s one of the main benefits of Ditto’s Pro plan. It puts them all in one place."
As the independent music landscape continues to evolve, access to the right knowledge, technology and industry connections is becoming increasingly important.
Ditto X is aiming to bring all three together, giving artists the opportunity not just to hear from the industry, but to get hands-on with the tools and people that can help move their careers forward.
Ditto X: Meet The Music Industry 2026 takes place on Thursday 19th November 2026 at Indigo at The O2 in London. Learn more and get tickets here.
